Monarch Mountain, located just west of Salida in South Central Colorado, is what you are looking for when you want a true ski area. Mirkwood Basin
Head to the top of the Breezeway lift and after a short hike you will find 1100' of chutes, glades, cliffs, and powder...welcome to Mirkwood Basin! Previously only accessed by Monarch's Snowcat, Mirkwood adds a new dimension to the ski area and offers riders a little backcountry fun inside the area. Ride through light all-natural champagne powder until your legs can take no more!
Monarch is a family-oriented area and has an on-site day care facility. The staff are professionals and well-trained in first aid and early childhood development. Ski programs are available for older children as well. PSIA-certified instructors offer American Teaching Method education clinics in alpine, telemark and backcountry skiing and snowboarding. There also are special programs for women and children.
With numerous offerings of affordable lodging around the ski area and the neighboring town of Salida, Monarch is a quick getaway escape for anyone. The town holds many events from live music to colorful art galleries and fine dining along the Arkansas River. Don't forget about the historic FIBArk Festival every summer also, a celebration of all things whitewater!
Monarch Mountain is located on scenic U.S. Highway 50 between the Royal Gorge and Gunnison, 21 miles west of the town of Salida. From Denver, take Highway 285 south to U.S. Highway 50 west to Monarch Ski Resort. Much closer to Denver than you think and no insane traffic like you will find on I-70 every weekend!
